When using shore power, if the ground wire from the shore supply is connected to a metal part of the boat, galvanic corrosion will occur. This can attack important areas such as the propeller and shaft, as well as quickly dissolving anodes that are there to protect them. Not connecting the ground wire is not a viable work around for this, as this would mean fuses and Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) will not work in case of an electrical fault. This isolation transformer was designed to combat these issues and allow a safe shore power connection that is not harmful to your boat. Shore power is connected directly to the primary side of the transformer and the secondary side runs to the boat. The device completely isolates the boat from the shore power ground connection and eliminates electrical continuity between the shower power and the boat, while still offering protection through GFCIs and fuses.
