Boat tachometers, or marine tachos, are rev counter gauges for boats. They come in a number of different varieties which record the engine revolutions in different ways depending on application. As always with brands such as Kus and Faria Beede, these are high quality gauges which create a professional looking dashboard, and are available in a range of classy styles. Faria tachometers are suitable for dual station use and feature a fine adjustment pot to aid with calibration.
Choosing the Appropriate Tachometer:Alternator or generator sensed tachos are used with diesel engines. The senders record revolutions from the filed coil of the alternator or uses a generator sender unit and relays the information to the gauge. The alternator sensed tachometer was invented by Thomas G Faria himself! These tachos are available in 3,000 RPM, 4,000 RPM and 5,000 RPM models and can include an incorporated LCD hourmeter.
Magnetic pick up tachos are fitted next to the flywheel and essentially count the ring gear teeth as they go past. This is only suitable for flywheels containing at least 30 teeth. These tachos are available in 3,000 RPM, 4,000 RPM and 5,000 RPM models and can include an incorporated LCD hourmeter.
Inboard petrol engine tachos work by reading the engine ignition coil. The gauge must be calibrated to work with each specific engine, depending on the number of cylinders it has, which can be easily done using a small switch at the back of the gauge. These tachos are available in 6,000 RPM models only and can include an incorporated LCD hourmeter.
Outboard petrol engine tachos sense from the alternator of the outboard motor. The gauge must be calibrated to work with each specific engine, depending on the number of alternator poles it has, which can be easily done using a small switch at the back of the gauge. These tachos are available in 7,000 RPM models only and can include an incorporated LCD hourmeter or system check.
