An expansion tank is generally fitted to collect coolant as the engine or hot water system warms up and / or to make servicing / inspection of level more accessible. When expansion tanks are fitted above the engine line, and fed from the highest point on the engines cooling circuit, they can also provide an effective air bleed system.
