Requests for Thornycroft spares should always be accompanied by the engine number / build list. The Thornycroft 251 is a 4 cylinder, 4 stroke, vertical, inline 4.165L diesel engine, based on the naturally aspirated Ford 2722 Dover industrial engine. The 251 engine replaced the popular and long running Thornycroft 250, and proved just as popular with commercial and private operators, offering good horsepower, and excellent reliability. The engine was produced in either heat exchanger or keel cooled versions, the keel cooled version being a popular power plant for lifeboats. Thornycroft always used a separate manifold and heat exchanger on their engines. These can be replaced by the latest combined heat exchanger manifold unit. Thornycroft did not produce a turbo charged version of this engine. From the MS-01-251 Thornycroft leaflet, ratings are as follows: 1250RPM 39.5BHP 8.72LPH, 1800RPM 61.8BHP 12.9LPH, 2200RPM 72.9BHP 15.3LPH, 2600RPM 77.3BHP 16.6LPH. Intermittent rating is shown as 85BHP.
