Requests for Thornycroft spares should always be accompanied by the engine number / build list. The Thornycroft 381 is a 6 cylinder, 4 stroke, vertical, inline 6.232L diesel engine, based on the naturally aspirated Ford 2725E Dover industrial engine. The 381 engine replaced the popular and long running Thornycroft 380, and proved just as popular with commercial and private operators, offering good horsepower and excellent reliability. The engine was produced mostly in Heat Exchanger configuration, but was also built for Keel Cooled applications. The reliability of these engines made them a popular choice with the commercial fishing sector. Thornycroft always used a separate manifold and heat exchanger on their engines. These can be replaced by the latest combined heat exchanger manifold unit. Thornycroft did not produce a turbo charged version of this engine. From the MS-01-381 Thornycroft leaflet, ratings are as follows: 1250RPM 60.5BHP 12.6LPH, 1800RPM 88.3BHP 17.9LPH, 2200RPM 103.5BHP 21.6LPH, 2600RPM 115.4BHP 24.8LPH. Intermittent rating is shown as 127BHP.
