This is a listing of items that have been fitted to Thornycroft 98 engines throughout production. We hope this page will help you; if you do not see what you are looking for, please contact us. We may be able to help. The inclusion of items on this page does not infer that these items are genuine Thornycroft spares. Please check carefully the suitability of the item for your own application. Gasket sets listed do not contain gaskets for marinisation components. Requests for Thornycroft spares should always be accompanied by the engine number / build list. The Thornycroft 98 is a 4 cylinder, 4 stroke, vertical, inline 1.608L diesel engine, based on the Ford XLD416; the industrial version of the once popular Escort/Orion/Fiesta engine. The Thornycroft 98 was most popular in the Heat Exchanger cooled configuration, but was also sold suitable for Keel Cooled installations such as for Inland Canal use. The lighter weight of the Thornycroft 98 engine made it popular with sailing boat builders; however, as the camshaft is belt driven, this was less popular with owners used to older chain driven technologies. It is important to ensure that cam belt inspection / replacement is part of your maintenance schedule. From the MS-02-98 Thornycroft leaflet, ratings are as follows: 1500RPM 14BHP 4.09LPH, 2000RPM 22BHP 5.64LPH, 2500RPM RPM 29BHP 7.27LPH, 3000RPM 36BHP 9.09LPH. Intermittent rating is shown as 50BHP.
